Found this site while researching mobile communications equipment. Way more to think about than I realized, thought some of you might find it useful.

For mobile radios, a decommissioned police vehicle is an affordable way to get into the hobby. Just don't get ones that are obviously a cop car at a glance. :p

The radio itself is the least of my concerns. There are plenty of reasonably-priced ones these days. It’ s everything else that site talks about: grounding (3 types!), etc.

Crackle can also be oink though...
That said, I’ve gotten to the point of just slapping a mag mount on my roof and hooking it up to my TH-D72 when I actually want to play radio in the car. (My Mk4 Golf, I used an IC-7000, and had drilled the roof for VHF/UHF , and used a hatch mount with hamsticks for HF, which actually worked decently. Maybe not K0BG-approved best practices on HF , but it worked well enough.)

Yup. Some RF systems Tacoma PD uses is so susceptible to interference that they have grounding straps hanging off the car to touch the ground.

ImJust doing the mag mount/baofeng combo, but I’d like an installed unit eventually.
That said in just dabbling in vhf, no hf for me.

I’m trying to figure out how to manage large convoys. That frustrating tradeoff between power, range, and universality.

in convoys its lowest common denominator with least cost of entry, imo. thats cb or frs. frankly an gmrs base station and the small fcc fee is the easiest/best. then you have power and range but all it takes is for n convoy member is a blister pack radio

Yeah, GMRS is the direction I’m headed for most use cases, but always looking for more flexibility.

Alan is a helpful guy, I’ve used his site a bunch .
Convoys that are close should just use frs - it’s the easiest and cleanest solution. Next would be cb radio but that requires some install..
If you need more than that you are basically a HAM club.. get your tickets get everyone set up.

Fortunately CB is fairly common in the Jeep world, but range is obviously quite limited and each time it seems like someone (often me) is having hardware problems.

A
radio is only as good as it’s antenna - and unfortunately there is a lot of crap out there equipment wise
. Plus mounting it is another ball of wax.

I’ve been in caravans that stretch for several miles, several dozen vehicles . My next ride will be much smaller, so GMRS for me with FRS handhelds for the people with me will be fine.
Yes, I have my GMRS and Technician licenses.

I gotta be honest, I’ve never done a convoy more than 4 trucks and I can’t say I would want to. I’ve been meaning to try a group trail ride with the local club but...I just can’t bring myself to do it.

The really big ones have been charity rides. It gets pretty hairy when most of the drivers don’t know the route and don’t have any way of even listening to the organizers try to coordinate things.

I own a former police cruiser. They don't leave the radios in. The joke is that if you get a cruiser and install a radio, it'll be more likely to be mistaken for a cop.
